On the afternoon of March 6, 2023, at meeting room C, Faculty of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (FEEE), Ton Duc Thang University, a Journal Club activity was held on "Using a mixture of biodiesel, Ethanol, and biodiesel and Neem tree oil for diesel applications with engine emissions profiles”. This is the research of Dr. Fayaz Hussain – Lecturer of the FEEE. Attending the seminar were Dr. Tran Thanh Phuong – Vice Dean of the FEEE, Dr. Huynh Van Van – Assistant Dean along with FEEE’s lecturers and the students.
Opening the seminar, Dr. Fayaz Hussain explained about biodiesel which is prepared from Neem oil and uses a transesterification process. For this study, the fuel used by compression ignition engine (diesel engine) is D100 (100% diesel), B100 (100% of bio-fuel of Azadirachta indica oil), D80B20 (80% diesel and 20% of bio-fuel of Azadirachta indica oil) and D60B20E20 (60% diesel, 20% of bio-fuel of Azadirachta indica oil and 20% ethanol) based mass percent. Fuels D100, B100, D80B20, B80E20, and D60B20E20 were performed for the respective experiments. Then, a pressure transducer placed on top of the engine is used to measure the combustion data. These sensors and transducers are connected to a data acquisition system with a computer setup. With the measured parameters of each fuel mixture and especially the fuel consumption results, the B20D80 fuel has the best effect on the thermal efficiency of the brakes and emits less HC and CO emissions, but it causes much higher NOx emissions. However, the study still has some limitations, the topic is still in the phase of future research.
The above topic has received a lot of comments from lecturers and students, especially worth sharing from the Faculty Management Board. The seminar was lively and a great success. Through this seminar, the students can understand the process of biodiesel research as well as understand the need to replace fossil fuels with biofuels. At the same time, there are concrete steps to help prevent climate change and create a clean, green environment.
