On the afternoon of May 18, 2025, the award ceremony of the 13th "Design, Manufacturing, Application Award" took place at Nong Lam University organized by the Ho Chi Minh City Youth Union. This year's award attracted 72 products from universities and businesses. In particular, there was a Gold Medal-winning project from URLAB Research Lab - Faculty of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Ton Duc Thang University (TDTU) with the product "UAV system supporting marine reconnaissance".
The maritime reconnaissance UAV developed by the URLAB team integrates advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), computer vision, GPS navigation, and environmental sensors. The UAV is capable of autonomously detecting hazardous maritime phenomena such as rip currents and whirlpools, using deep learning algorithms trained on real-world datasets. A high-resolution camera combined with an advanced image processing system enables near real-time threat analysis and alerts.
The competition attracted dozens of applied research projects from various universities, fostering a highly competitive and innovative environment. The judging panel praised the UAV project for its innovation and practical value: the solution not only demonstrated strong technical knowledge and manufacturing skills from the students but also addressed an urgent social issue coastal safety. The success of the URLAB team garnered positive attention from the young scientific community and professional organizations. Many experts noted the project’s high potential for real-world implementation and its promise to open new research directions in applying UAV technology to disaster management and maritime safety.
The URLAB research team’s achievement is not only a source of pride for the students of the Faculty of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, but also affirms the reputation of Ton Duc Thang University in scientific research and innovation. The results of this contest clearly reflect the university’s educational quality and the dedication, creativity, and problem-solving capacity of its students in addressing real-world challenges. This success serves as a strong motivation for future student generations to follow in their footsteps, cultivate a passion for research, and actively participate in academic competitions thereby contributing to the growing prestige of both the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Faculty and the Ton Duc Thang University as a whole.
