The First International Competition for Research and Design of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV Competition 2024)

On November 21 and 22, 2024, Faculty of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (FEEE), Ton Duc Thang University (TDTU) successfully hosted the first International Competition on Research and Design of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV Competition 2024). Under the theme “Localization and Delivery,” the event attracted 9 participating teams. Specifically, there are 7 teams from universities in Vietnam including Vietnam Aviation Academy, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education, and Ton Duc Thang University, alongside two teams from the Czech Republic’s VSB–Technical University of Ostrava and Tomas Bata University. This competition marked a significant milestone in the advancement of UAV technology in Vietnam.

The opening ceremony on November 21 was a solemn occasion, featuring an oath-taking by team representatives to uphold honesty and solidarity. The organizing committee also presented commemorative medals to participating teams, emphasizing the international significance of the event. The first day of competition featured thrilling matches in the group stage: SkyNetics (TDTU) led Group A with consistent performance, Propellers (VSB, Czech Republic) dominated Group B, and SkyVision (TDTU) excelled in Group C with the highest score. The top-performing teams advanced to the knockout rounds.

On November 22, 2024 the semifinals and final matches were fiercely contested. Two TDTU teams (SkyNetics and SkyVision) defeated Šempa-TBUZ (Tomas Bata University) and Last LIGHT (VSB) respectively, setting up an all-TDTU final. In a closely fought match, SkyVision showcased outstanding UAV control skills and strategic precision to claim victory, becoming the first champion of the competition.

The closing ceremony of the award ceremony recorded that after 2 days of competition with dramatic matches between 9 teams, in the end: Team SkyVision from the host TDTU won the Championship with a prize of 2,500 USD; ranked 2nd was the SkyNetics team also from TDTU with a prize of 1,500 USD and ranked 3rd was the Propellers team from the Technical University of Ostrava (Czech Republic) with 500 USD. Team Sempa (Tomas Bata University) won the Encouragement Prize and Team VAERO (Vietnam Aviation Academy) won the Innovation Prize with the same prize of 500 USD.

The 2024 UAV Competition has affirmed the talent and creativity of students, while promoting the development of the UAV industry. The founding member universities of the Competition have agreed to organize the “2nd International UAV Design and Manufacturing Competition” which will take place at the Technical University of Ostrava (Czech Republic) in June 2025; with an expected scale of about 25 teams from 10-15 universities participating, from Vietnam, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, the Netherlands, France... promising more breakthrough ideas, opening up a bright future for this field
